DISEASES & TREATMENTS

Medical Specializations & Neurological Services

In my practice, I offer comprehensive neurological diagnostics, consultation, and treatment for
various neurological diseases and symptoms.

I am pleased to accompany and advise you from the correct diagnosis to the appropriate treatment. Parkinson’s is not curable, but the symptoms of the disease can be treated very effectively. Clarification by a Parkinson’s specialist is essential.

The diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease is primarily made through a precise clinical-neurological examination in my office. This examination allows Parkinson’s disease to be distinguished from other, rarer atypical Parkinsonian syndromes or so-called essential tremor. Other “movement
disorders,” such as dystonia, can also be clinically differentiated and diagnosed.

The goal of diagnostics is to identify typical features, rule out other causes, and begin drug therapy as quickly as possible. Atypical Parkinsonian syndromes can often be detected even in early stages using a modern 3-Tesla MRI.

In early stages, correct medication can achieve an improvement in symptoms of 60–100%. However, improvement is possible at every stage of the disease. In addition to essential medication adjustment, symptoms and potentially the progression of the disease can be positively influenced by sports, regular exercise, physical therapy, and a balanced diet.

My practice offers precise diagnostics and therapeutic support. All necessary examinations (laboratory, MRI, etc.) can be carried out without long waiting times.

For a small number of patients, adjusting oral medication is not sufficient. “Pump therapies” allow medication to be administered continuously. These therapies deliver medication in liquid or gel form directly into the system through various methods. This helps avoid or significantly improve “fluctuations” (oscillations in effectiveness). Furthermore, this therapy bypasses the stomach, meaning that nutrition no longer needs to be strictly coordinated with oral medication intake.

Available Pump Therapies:

1. Continuous Subcutaneous Levodopa Therapy.
2. Transjejunal Levodopa Therapy (PEG-J): Levodopa is administered directly through a thin tube placed through the abdominal wall into the stomach and further into the small intestine.
3. Continuous Subcutaneous Apomorphine Pump: Apomorphine has an effect comparable to Levodopa and is applied via a thin tube directly under the skin.

The choice of treatment must be decided on an individual basis together with the patient. I can personally manage the initiation of pump therapy at the Döbling Private Clinic. Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS), where impulse generators are implanted in the brain, is also well-established.
My practice provides the necessary assessments to determine if a patient is a candidate for this therapy.

Treatment for gait and movement disorders, such as vascular encephalopathy or dystonia.

I can advise you on appropriate preventive measures. Services include:
• Detailed diagnostics and early detection of Alzheimer’s disease.
• Differentiation and diagnosis of other causes of dementia.

• Extensive consultation and support for both patients and caregivers.
Therapy

Medication therapies for dementia syndromes are offered, and recommendations are discussed on which measures can positively influence memory.

Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is very common, affecting approximately 10–15% of the population at some point in their lives. The diagnosis is made through an extensive consultation and clinical-neurological examination. Additional blood tests and, in rare cases, an MRI of the spine may be necessary.

Typical Symptoms:
• Unpleasant sensations in the legs (rarely arms) occurring mainly at rest and in the evening
before falling asleep.
• A characteristic urge to move the limbs, with symptoms improving significantly during
activity such as standing up or walking.
• Patients often describe the sensations as tingling, burning, pulling, stinging, or pain.

RLS can massively impair quality of life, leading to sleep disorders, fatigue, exhaustion, concentration problems, and depressive moods. In my practice, we distinguish between primary (idiopathic) and secondary Restless Legs Syndrome, as the respective therapies differ. Primary
RLS is often genetic, while secondary RLS can be caused by iron deficiency, kidney dysfunction, thyroid disease, spinal changes, polyneuropathy, or certain medications. RLS can usually be treated very effectively with medication to restore sleep quality.

As a former senior physician at the Stroke Unit (Hospital of the Brothers of Saint John of God, Vienna), I possess specialized knowledge in:

• Stroke prevention and follow-up care.
• Recommendations for drug therapy, lifestyle measures, and neurological rehabilitation.

  • Headaches: Migraine, tension-type headache, cervical syndrome, etc.
  • Back Pain: Lumbago and sciatica.
  • Nerve Pain: Trigeminal neuralgia, facial pain, painful polyneuropathies, and other neuralgias.

Diagnostic clarification and therapy.

Dizziness is a very common neurological symptom. I offer thorough neurological examinations to clarify the cause and provide therapy for various vertigo and dizziness syndromes.
