Specialist in Neurology, Vienna Supported by the Parkinson’s Self-Help Group Vienna

Foreword by Dr. Alois Mock

“Since it became known that I suffer from Parkinson’s disease, I have received a vast number of letters from those affected as well as well-meaning fellow citizens. There were tips, personal reports, and scientific publications about this disease. I was able to learn a lot from them, and of course, I obtained additional literature and discussed it with my doctors.

It is clear to me that there are practically as many different types of Parkinson’s as there are patients. The disease progresses differently for everyone, or rather, he or she perceives it differently. Everyone also responds differently to the medication prescribed to them. Great progress has already been made in the medical and therapeutic fields, making life easier for those affected. Self-help groups provide valuable information and support. But much remains to be done in theory and practice. This also primarily concerns the relatives, from whom the advanced stage of the disease often demands significantly more than from the patients they care for so well.

I therefore welcome any initiative that closes gaps in knowledge, removes uncertainties, allows those affected to speak out, and gives new patients and their families practical advice on dealing with the disease.

Univ.-Doz. Dr. W. Gerschlager has undertaken such diligent work and brought his many years of experience with Parkinson’s patients into this book. May it find its way to many interested readers and, through education, provide courage and hope.”
